Hayfever Management Clinic Inverness

Prescription medication administered by injection may be considered as a treatment option for the management of severe seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in selected patients. This treatment is not suitable for everyone and may be associated with potential side effects. A full clinical assessment is required to determine whether this option is appropriate.

All patients are advised to discuss the range of available treatments with a qualified prescriber during their consultation.

Written information is provided in advance, outlining the potential benefits, risks, and alternative treatment options to support informed decision-making.

Hay fever is an inflammatory condition of the nasal passages caused by an immune response to allergens such as pollen, dust, or animal dander. Symptoms can include sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and watery eyes.

While many individuals experience mild symptoms that can be managed with over-the-counter or GP-prescribed treatments, some patients may have more severe or persistent symptoms that do not respond adequately to standard therapies.

In such cases, an injectable corticosteroid (a type of prescription anti-inflammatory medicine) may be considered following clinical evaluation. This is a prescription-only treatment and will only be offered where clinically appropriate.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is caused by an immune response to allergens such as pollen. Symptoms can include sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and watery eyes. While many people experience mild symptoms, some individuals may have more persistent or severe symptoms that impact daily activities.

For most patients, first-line treatments include antihistamines, nasal corticosteroid sprays, and other therapies available over the counter or via a GP.

These options are generally recommended before considering other interventions.

In selected cases where symptoms are severe and have not responded adequately to standard treatments, an injectable prescription medicine may be considered following assessment by a qualified prescriber. One such option is triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation associated with the allergic response.

Triamcinolone acetonide injection is a prescription-only medicine. Its use for hay fever is not routinely recommended and may be considered off-label; suitability must be determined on an individual basis after clinical evaluation.

The treatment may provide symptom relief for some patients for a period of time; however, responses can vary and it does not cure the underlying condition.

As with all medicines, there are potential risks and side effects. These may include local reactions at the injection site (such as skin thinning or changes in skin appearance), as well as systemic effects associated with corticosteroids. Because the medication is long-acting, any side effects may persist for several weeks.

This treatment is not suitable for everyone. A full consultation is required to assess your medical history, discuss alternative options, and review the potential benefits and risks. Written information will be provided to support informed decision-making before any treatment is offered.
