Pain Management Clinic @ Clinic MSK:
Clinic MSK is the only specialist injection clinic in the region delivering advanced, image-guided pain management in Inverness through a holistic, musculoskeletal-led model of care. Our informed diagnosis and pain assessment combines expert clinical examination with diagnostic ultrasound scanning and MRI imaging to accurately identify the source of pain and ensure every treatment is clinically justified and as safe as possible. We provide precise ultrasound-guided injections including local anaesthetic diagnostic blocks, hyaluronic acid joint injections, and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) healing stimulation blocks to reduce pain, restore movement, and support long-term tissue recovery. Care is strengthened by an MSc neuroplastic physiotherapist using pain neuroscience, movement retraining, and rehabilitation to address nervous system “software” drivers of pain, alongside a functional medicine practitioner supporting nutrition, lifestyle, metabolic optimisation, and DNA-informed functional testing—because lasting results come from combining interventional treatment with personalised exercise, recovery strategies, and whole-person care.

Diet and Lifestyle Management:
Evidence consistently shows that tailored exercise and movement therapy are essential for achieving meaningful, long-term improvement in pain, mobility, and function. At Inverness Pain Management Clinic, exercise programmes are individually designed around a patient’s body mechanics, age, health status, and physical ability, ensuring they are safe, realistic, and effective. While targeted treatments and clinical assessment can deliver short-term symptom relief, sustainable recovery is driven by patient dedication to ongoing movement, rehabilitation “homework,” and progressive exercise. Research in musculoskeletal medicine and pain neuroscience demonstrates that regular, appropriate exercise improves tissue health, joint stability, strength, and nervous system resilience—reducing pain sensitivity over time. By committing to personalised exercise and rehabilitation plans, patients play a crucial role in translating expert assessment into long-term, evidence-based outcomes for pain management and physical wellbeing.
Complex Presentations:
If your presentation is complex, outside our scope, or needs a different specialty for the safest care, we will refer you onward to the most appropriate provider with a clear explanation of our findings. We provide a detailed clinical summary to support continuity of care, drawing on your clinical examination, ultrasound assessment, MRI (where indicated), and physiotherapy/neuroscience-led input. To avoid misunderstanding and unnecessary worry, formal ultrasound reports are not issued directly to patients, as ultrasound findings are highly clinical and best interpreted in context; however, we will always talk you through the results clearly and share relevant findings with your referrer or onward specialist. MRI reports are forwarded to patients, but for safe, joined-up care they must also be provided to the referrer/receiving clinician, ensuring the next provider has the full information needed to plan appropriate treatment.
Ultrasound Reports:
Ultrasound reporting is a detailed, time-intensive process, and for that reason patients are welcome to request a copy of their clinical records to stay informed, but formal written ultrasound reports are available on request and are subject to an additional fee. Where ultrasound findings are relevant to onward care, we will always ensure the key clinical information is communicated appropriately within your care pathway. MRI reports are produced by an external specialist radiology team, and we do not have a direct route to contact the reporting radiologist. For this reason, final interpretation and clinical correlation of MRI findings sits with your referrer/lead clinician, who will place the report into the full context of your symptoms, examination, and treatment plan.
Treatments available:
At Clinic MSK, we offer a comprehensive range of evidence-based ultrasound-guided injection treatments designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, and support long-term joint and soft tissue recovery.
Our treatments include:
- Corticosteroid (steroid) injections
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
- Advanced regenerative options such as PRF and PRP-PRF combinations
- Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections including Durolane and premium 40% high molecular weight HA
- Saline injections, which are increasingly supported by evidence for pain relief and functional improvement in selected conditions.
Other Treatments Include:
- Radial Shockwave Therapy
- Focused Shockwave Therapy
- Combination Shockwave Therapy
To ensure injections are appropriate and clinically justified, we use diagnostic local anaesthetic blocks to confirm the true pain source before proceeding with longer-acting therapies.
Every patient receives an educated, informed, and carefully monitored treatment plan, with a strong emphasis on safety, precision, and personalised outcomes through specialist ultrasound-guided pain management in Inverness.
Why we use Ultrasound Guidance:
At Clinic MSK, we routinely use ultrasound guidance for joint and soft tissue injections because it allows real-time visualisation of anatomy, improving precision and supporting safe, evidence-based care. Research consistently shows higher needle-placement accuracy with ultrasound compared with landmark (“blind”) techniques across many joints, and in knee osteoarthritis in particular, systematic reviews have reported improvements in procedural comfort and pain/function outcomes in ultrasound-guided groups. Rather than claiming ultrasound is required in every situation, we reflect modern MSK best practice: where image guidance is available and clinically appropriate, it supports better targeting, helps avoid injecting into unintended tissues (such as fat or tendon), and strengthens clinical decision-making. As musculoskeletal medicine continues to evolve, many services are moving toward documented, image-guided pathways that align with contemporary expectations around clinical governance, informed consent, and defensible practice—while keeping the focus on what matters most: safer care and better outcomes for patients seeking ultrasound-guided joint injections and pain management in Inverness.
Radial and Focused Shockwave Therapy:
Radial and Focused Shockwave Therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment used to support healing and pain reduction in a wide range of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. At Clinic MSK, we use both radial shockwave therapy and focused shockwave therapy to stimulate tissue repair, improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and encourage long-term recovery in chronic tendon and soft tissue injuries. Shockwave is commonly used for conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, shoulder calcific tendinitis, patellar tendinopathy, and hip bursitis, helping to reduce pain and restore function without surgery.
Focused shockwave offers deeper, more targeted energy delivery for precise treatment areas, while radial shockwave provides broader coverage for more superficial or diffuse pain patterns. As part of an integrated rehabilitation approach including physiotherapy and exercise prescription, shockwave therapy supports faster recovery and improved mobility, making it a valuable option for patients seeking advanced non-surgical pain management in Inverness.
Radial and Focused Shockwave Therapy In Lipedema and Lymphatic Drainage:
Radial and focused Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is an emerging supportive treatment increasingly used in the management of lipedema, particularly for symptoms such as pain, tenderness, tissue tightness, and swelling. Early clinical studies and developing evidence suggest that shockwave therapy may help improve microcirculation, reduce fibrotic tissue change, and support healthier tissue function, with some research exploring its potential role in improving fluid dynamics and lymphatic-related congestion when used alongside established conservative approaches. At Clinic M, shockwave therapy for lipedema is offered as part of a holistic plan including movement and exercise therapy, compression support, and lifestyle and nutrition optimisation, aiming to improve comfort, mobility, and long-term symptom control. While further high-quality research is still evolving, shockwave therapy is increasingly recognised as a promising non-surgical option within modern lipedema treatment pathways, supporting patients seeking evidence-informed lipedema management in Inverness.
